I was lucky enough to be working for MGM animation when Charlie Brown’s Great Pumpkin finally came out. Ray Bradbury came to the studio to complain to my boss (Chuck Jones) that you couldn’t write a story called the great pumpkin and not show the title guy. He felt so bad about it that he wrote a screenplay for a TV special called The Pumpkin Tree. I have a copy of the script. When Chuck was ready to work on it, MGM was being dismantled so the show was never made. But years later when I was going through an airport I went into a bookstore and there it was: a paperback of a novel by Bradbury called The Pumpkin Tree. It’s available on Amazon today.
Whoops… I just looked it up and now remember that he changed the name of the story to The Halloween Tree.
